Wireless Connections

How to access the Huygens-Oort Wireless Network

The Huygens-Oort complex has been equipped with wireless Access Points. These are configured to communicate via the 802.11g protocol. Connecting to the wireless network should be done as described after the following general introduction.

Wireless networks are convenient means for notebooks and other small Computer equipment to get access to intranets and the internet. These networks are however notoriously unsafe (you could get network access sitting on the benches in front of the Oort-building without any identification -- so free internet for all...). Since we are not the internet provider for people walking by our building, we have implemented an authentication system.

To get online, connect to the wireless network called HLOortNetwork (written with exactly these capitals). The HLOortNetwork does not use WEP or any of the WPA variants. Next startup an internet browser, e.g. Mozilla or Internet Explorer. Trying to access any network address, say, you will see an authentication form appear in the browser. Enter your username and password and you will be granted wireless internet access. When done, close your browser and your session will expire quickly.

The username should be a combination of your username and the domain (Realm) you want to use for logging in. For people intending to use the sterrenwacht to authenticate this means that they will type something like user@STRW>;; as their username. People visiting Physics will type someuser@LION>. Students can use their ULCN-account: s0123456

A final note about safety: be aware that everything you send that is not encrypted by your computer can possibly be intercepted and read by other people within the range of your wireless antenna. (https and imaps use their own encryption and are therefore safe protocols to use).
